Live & Prosper in Honduras Seminar

Dear Friend,

Maybe you’ve dreamed of escaping to the Caribbean, lured by visions of an easier, less stressful lifestyle. But one by one, “mainstream” Caribbean destinations have been discovered and developed – and prices have skyrocketed – before you could stake your claim.

Maybe you thought it was too late…

I’m writing today to reassure you that the dream-filled Caribbean of your imagination are waiting for you in Honduras – just two hours from the States – with housing and land costs that are a mere fraction of what you’ll find on its Caribbean cousins.

Just ask International Living reader Penny Leigh – a former full-time resident of Colorado.  She first visited Roatan, a tiny Caribbean island off the north coast of Honduras, in early 2000 with her partner Tony. According to Penny, they knew within days that Honduras was where they wanted to enjoy the rest of their lives.

After three trips to Roatan, a year liquidating their Colorado gift shop, and many home garage sales and donations to shed a rural, mountain, winter lifestyle, they finally moved to Roatan in March of 2005.

Now they live in a beachfront home surrounded by lush, green jungle. Constant trade winds keep them cool – year-round. And the only sounds they hear are crashing waves, rustling palm trees, and the lively chatter of majestic Red Macaws that often frequent their property.

Sunrises, Stargazing, and Swimming with Seahorses…

j

“We call our home ‘Casa De Bella Vista’ - home of the beautiful view,” says Penny. “When I look outside my window in the morning, I can watch the sunrise – a rising, glowing, red ball of fire that reflects on the azure Caribbean sea as the gentle, tropical trade winds ruffle my sheets. It’s a delicious way to contemplate another new day in Paradise.”

From her home, she can walk down a staircase to her own private lagoon during the daytime for swimming in the Caribbean sea.  “Seahorses are real,” she says. “You can see them while snorkeling or diving.” And at night, she frequently gazes at the brilliant sky - trying to identify all the constellations.  “It’s amazing how many stars you can see when there’s no light pollution to cloud the sky.”

Like many expatriates that have relocated to Honduras, Penny keeps busy running her new business that caters to the burgeoning tourist industry. In mid-2005, she opened ‘Penelope’s Island Emporium’ – a shop specializing in fine, tropical, one-of-a-kind jewelry as well as personal and home accessories.

And although her new business keeps her busy much of the time, she still manages to find time to enjoy all the charms of first-class Caribbean beachfront living.

“When I’m not growing my business, I often sit out on our deck and watch huge schools of bonito make the sea boil as they thrash about. I also can see and hear many dolphins from our deck. They love to jump and play together…all the time! It brings a tear to my eyes at times…and I need to pinch myself to believe that I’m here - experiencing such wonder in my new life.”

However, Penny does have one regret about moving to Honduras – and it’s a big one.

“We should have done this years ago,” says Penny. “For us, Honduras is the ‘Final Destination.’ Even with many surprising adjustments, we have never been happier or felt more like we’ve finally come home.”

Why Honduras has earned a reputation as an “emerging haven”
for adventurers, entrepreneurs, and retirees…

Honduras sits at the knee of Central America and possesses a spectacular 400 miles of unspoiled Caribbean coastline and another 80 miles of Pacific coast. All year round, temperatures hover in the 80s – with cooler, forested areas inland. Jaguars, armadillos, toucans, and herons complete this scene of a wild, untamed paradise.

The Bay Islands – and the coral reef surrounding them, which is second in size only to the Great Barrier Reef – have been a well-kept secret of divers, snorkelers, and explorers around the world for many years. But there’s much more to this tropical paradise than you might have thought…

Coral Reef in Honduras

What most people don’t realize (a fact that can work in your favor) is that Honduras is a far cry from the “banana republic” of the past. It is one of the most secure environments in Latin America, enjoying freedom from the organized political violence and military power struggles that have plagued some of its neighbors.

“I’m so glad Ron and Janine have been here and will continue to be here for us. The presenters and participants all seemed to click well together. I already feel I have a community here. Ron and Janine are the best!”
- Pamela Eslinger - Minneapolis, MN

Honduras maintains close and friendly ties with the U.S. and has made good use of the billions of dollars in foreign aid it received after Hurricane Mitch. The effects of that hurricane have been reduced to a memory, as the roads, bridges, and infrastructure have been rebuilt to be better than before. This year, as part of the G8 summit, most of Honduras’ foreign debt was forgiven, with the requirement that the money saved go into improved infrastructure.

Today’s Honduras is peaceful, safe, incredibly beautiful – and loaded with opportunities for relaxed and prosperous living. As I’ll explain in more detail in a moment, there’s something for everyone in Honduras…

  • For Entrepreneurs: A 10- to 20-year tax holiday when you start certain types of business ventures, few restrictions on exports, and the front end of a coming boom in tourism, business, and development. Between the ZIP and the ZOLT – programs designed to attract and benefit business – you can’t help but dream of the possible profits of just about any kind of venture you can imagine.
  • For Retirees: Bring your car and household goods duty-free…and receive your Social Security and pension income tax-free. Enjoy a cost of living that is a mere sliver of what you pay just to get by in the States or much of Europe – and still have enough left over to afford life’s little luxuries. A live-in maid or similar household help is available for just $40 a week…prescriptions run about 40% less than in the States…the savings go on and on, making Honduras very attractive for people with fixed incomes.
  • For Bargain Hunters: Rebuilt infrastructure, low labor costs, and a pro-business government have spawned numerous opportunities. Positive exchange rates and legitimate banking structures make handling your money simple.
  • For Vacationers: The deals on land and housing will leave you speechless. There’s no end to the options and creativity when you want to escape – for just a little while, or even for good.
  • For Dreamers and Escape Artists: Honduras is full of the stuff most of us dream about…an enviable climate, inexpensive domestic help, affordable luxuries, dream housing at a fraction of U.S. and Caribbean prices, both English- and Spanish-speaking friendly neighbors, access to modern amenities when you need them, breathtaking scenery…and as much peace, quiet, and relaxed easy living as you can handle all year round.

At this three-day Live and Prosper in Honduras Seminar we’ll tell you everything you need to know for your particular circumstance, from finding or building your dream home to financing your property purchase…from shipping your household goods here to residency and visa requirements…from setting up health and property insurance to banking and tax information…plus the inside scoop on day-to-day living and more.

The International Living Insiders Are Waiting For You

This hot new travel and investment destination is not new at all to International Living. We’ve been watching it for a while (10 years!), getting our people in place, setting up our local office, making the connections on the ground to help you identify the best deals and opportunities. With their help and inside information, you’ll discover:

  • How you can get a 20-year tax holiday compliments of the pro-business Honduran government when you start a business in a free trade zone, or in the tourism industry.
  • Property prices that are a fraction of other seaside areas -- a quarter-acre lot with a spectacular view of the water for $25,000 that you would spend a million dollars or more for in the States or most of Europe.
  • Which exports can leave the country with no taxes imposed – making an import/export business highly profitable.
  • How accessible Honduras is thanks to millions of dollars of foreign investment and aid the area has received in recent years. Whether you decide to retire, vacation or start a business here, you’ll appreciate the newly rebuilt roads, bridges, and top-ranked seaports – an infrastructure worthy of supporting your hopes and dreams.
  • Hidden pockets of the coast that are only accessible by boat – with unspoiled beauty and a quiet solitude that will remain even as the islands get discovered – only the property values will appreciate beyond what you can imagine now.
  • Access to modern amenities when you want or need them – shopping malls and supermarkets, cable or satellite TV, modern movie theaters with first run films, restaurants that serve a diversity of cuisines in addition to local fare.

You don’t have to let another Caribbean opportunity slip through your fingers this time! Not when you have an entire team of experts and experienced expatriates waiting to share with you everything they know about the world that awaits you in Honduras.

Discover the Best-Kept Secret of Adventure Travelers

At the foot of the impressive Pico Bonito Mountain, and just a 2-hour ferry ride across the sea to the increasingly popular Roatan, is the hippest hot-spot along the coast of Honduras: the town of La Ceiba. This vibrant city – the third largest in Honduras – will serve as home base for our three-day information-packed seminar.

We believe the mainland coast right now hides the best bargains to be found in this beautiful country but you’ll also have opportunities to visit Roatan, or the other quieter, more secluded islands of Utila and Guanaja – along with select spots across the mainland, too.

f

Just two hours by air from either Houston or Miami, you’ll discover quintessential Caribbean surroundings – miles of white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and fiery sunsets. I should warn you, there’s a very good chance you won’t want to leave. You wouldn’t be the first…

One International Living reader, a real estate developer, was looking for a relaxed, family-oriented place to raise his children. He and his wife scoured opportunities in Belize, Costa Rica, and the U.S. Virgin Islands – but they were all too rich for their bank account. Then, they found Roatan, and knew this was the place. Today, this happy IL reader has built and sold dozens of island dream homes designed to suit the needs of small investors and adventure travelers.

Another benefit of living and prospering in Honduras is the exchange rate – now at 19 lempiras to the U.S. dollar – that stretches your money even further in a country that is already among the least expensive in Latin America. Plus, you can pay for your property – or even your daily staples – in either U.S. dollars or lempiras, whichever you happen to have on hand.

There’s also no need to worry about getting medical assistance in Honduras. An American doctor has opened an eight-bed hospital on the east end of Roatan – with appointments running just $10 to $15 each. Prescriptions are an even more affordable endeavor, typically 40% less than you’d pay in the States. And though you hate to think you’ll need it, it’s comforting to know there is a major medical hospital in San Pedro Sula that is staffed with graduate doctors from Harvard, Yale, Tulane, and other fine Universities from the States.

What Is Your Definition of Paradise?

“There are no traffic jams, no snarling at each other, no hurry, rarely a raised voice… All the stress and disillusionment with life in general that was dragging us down has vanished.”
--Tom Campbell, expatriate and full-time resident of Roatan

Timing Is Everything – And It’s Just Right Now

The press and the tourists have put Honduras squarely on the map. The Washington Post named Honduras the “6th top new global destination for 2004,”  and reality television wasn’t too far behind. Viewers fell in love with Roatan when they watched “Temptation Island”. Many have been tempted indeed.

A brisk rate of tourism is the underpinning of a solid economy. Honduras can boast an 18% to 20% a year rise in tourism over the last two years. Compare this to a 6% to 12% increase in Mexican tourism over the same time period and you can easily see why we feel we are on the early end of a coming boom – one that you won’t want to miss.

“There was an extremely wide variety of info on both the islands & mainland. Thanks to Ron & Janine for organizing an extremely informative & enjoyable conference. We think the speakers were top notch. We definitely got our money’s worth!” - Teri & Chuck Oberman - Iowa, IA

While word is getting out about Honduras, it’s still not too late to stake your claim. In fact, many would say the timing is absolutely perfect. Early investors, both big and small, have taken the early risks necessary to prove the opportunity is for real.

Such as billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen, who occasionally anchors his yacht off the West End beach area of Roatan. Or the six cruise lines that bring tourists from Europe and the U.S. The airlines and hotel operators who have spent millions to transform Honduras from yet another misunderstood and overlooked Latin American country – to one of the hottest, up and coming destinations on the travel (and  global investment) scene.

The Bay Islands and Beyond: Unrivalled Beauty, Unmatched Value

You’ll be perched at an enviable location – in La Ceiba with the Bay Islands on one side, and the run of the mainland on the other.

While the islands are breathtaking and serene – with plenty of real estate, business, and other opportunities to explore – they are by no means the only worthwhile location this country has to offer. The mainland is simply dripping with history, ancient secrets, and mysteries among its verdant valleys and forests.

For a little nightlife, a $12 game of golf at a respectable course, some well-deserved shopping – not to mention some great property deals – you can start exploring right in the backyard of your glamorous resort. La Ceiba is renowned among locals and tourists alike for its beach-side discos, hotels, shopping centers, fine restaurants, and enough activity to liven things up.

The ancient Mayans chose Copan as their capital city from the 400s to the 800s AD – no doubt because it was one of the most beautiful with a near-perfect climate year-round. Steeped in history, you’ll find this small town full of Mayan pyramids and temples, plus the Hieroglyphic Staircase which contains the longest stretch of hieroglyphic text in the world. Stroll the cobbled streets, take in the hot springs and waterfalls – or go hiking and horseback riding.

San Pedro Sula is where you’ll find many of the U.S.-based companies – such as Fruit of the Loom, Maidenform, Hanes, Outer Banks, Wrangler, Oshkosh B’Gosh, and numerous other multinational firms. Tela and Trujillo offer a wide array of leisure activities, professional services, handicrafts such as the local passion for wood carving, a Botanical Garden, a butterfly farm, and one ancient, sacred site after another commemorating the solid history of the region.

And if you want the best of both worlds – convenience, cosmopolitan shopping, museums, and culture, but still that peaceful island pace – look no further than the capital city of Tegucilgapa. The climate is tropical, but the near 4,000-foot elevation provides cooler temperatures than the beaches. You’ll meet Christian Wing, the owner and developer of one of Tegucilgapa’s premier communities, Villa Elena – and learn about country club living just 20 minutes from the airport – but a world away in every other sense.

“This was my first IL conference after having been a Lifetime Member for more than two years. All speakers were readily available for individual discussion both during the conference and in the restaurant/bar afterwards. I would certainly join another International Living conference as I feel the sourcing of the information and quality of the introduction will save a lot of groundwork and provide reliable professionals who will be invaluable for those considering a future life and/or investment in a foreign land.” - David H. M. Walker - Gassin, France

You’ll also discover the best-kept secret of mainland Honduras living – according to retirees and expats you can live well on less than $1,000 a month! This is about half of what you’ll spend to live comfortably on the Bay Islands – which is still an affordable $2,000 a month.

Imagine, too, how well you could live in any one of these properties:

  • High on a hill overlooking the main town and with incredible views of the west end of the island, Cayos Cochinos and the mainland mountains, this three-bedroom home is selling for just $160,000.
  • In this undiscovered area, which boasts miles and miles of pristine white-sand beaches, you can build your dream beachfront property, using first-class materials and an array of tropical hardwoods. Rugged mountains create a scenic backdrop. Waterfalls and rivers feed giant plantations where bananas, pineapples, and melons grow. And the locals here take pride in a tradition of hospitality and warmth. Here, construction prices start as low as $40 per square foot – or even less if you’re patient. (Building a home in St. John, United States Virgin Islands starts around $300 per square foot.)
  • Just twenty minutes outside the exciting beachside town of La Ceiba, you can own your own villa for just $67,000. For only $3,000 more, you can furnish it. Then, for only $106 a month, you won’t have to do one single thing to take care of it – cable television, all outdoor maintenance, security, plus access to the three pools, amenities, and grounds of a major hotel resort next door is included. The hotel will handle renting out your villa when you’re not there. Right now, very few non-Hondurans know about this special deal, but our local IL staff unearthed the opportunity and will share more about it at the seminar…

To put these kinds of deals into perspective, consider that you’d have to spend around $2.5 million to get near the beach in the Cayman Islands. The average sale price of a house in the Bahama’s Harbour Island is in the $500,000 to $700,000 range – and can go up to $2.5 million and beyond. Even in Belize – often considered the cheaper paradise – comparable homes would run at least $350,000 to $500,000 and up.

There’s simply no better deal to be had in any other Caribbean country. But don’t take my word for it – come and check out the promise of Honduras for yourself.

Certainly you could come down here on your own and learn about the place – wander into a real estate office or find an attorney to answer your questions. But you take your chances when you just walk in off the street without knowing for sure if you’ve found someone you can trust.

I urge you instead to take advantage of our 10 years of experience in this country, plus the on-the-ground expertise of our local office coordinators, Janine and Ron Goben. There’s just nothing like landing in a foreign county, and being hosted by friends who have already picked out the best sights and restaurants and opportunities for you to visit during your stay.

You’ll Have Fun Too…

Although you’re coming to learn - it’s not going to be all work and no play! We have plenty of social activities planned. From sunset cocktail receptions to group dinners you’ll have plenty of opportunities to mingle with our experts, expats, and your fellow attendees.

And when you’re not in meetings you can enjoy the fabulous amenities of the Quinta Real hotel - located right on the Caribbean Sea in La Ceiba.  From the white sand beach, sea-front swimming pool, spa and gym, restaurant and bars, the hotel provides you with exciting options for relaxation and enjoyment. It’s going to be an exceptional experience unlike any other.

In just three days, you’ll meet other like-minded people, gather reliable and solid advice, identify tried-and-true contacts who will treat you well, and feel confident that you have found the best deals possible in the shortest amount of time. That kind of confidence and certainty is invaluable when you are thinking about making a big move or investment in a new country.

EXPERTS AND EXPATS –
Here To Tell You Everything You Need To Know To Make Your Move

We've invited an array of speakers who have already done what you're considering. They've bought and sold real estate…built their own Caribbean castle…run a coffee plantation…started their own tourist business…the list goes on and on…
These speakers will share with you their own experiences. They won't only talk about hope and dreams, but about real-life strategies that can make those dreams turn into reality. They'll tell you, straight up, what works and what doesn’t. They'll explain what drew them to Honduras…and why they stay. And they will give you the kind of practical, hands-on advice they themselves could have used when they first jumped in.
Below are just a few of the people you’ll hear from this May:

Ron and Janine Goben have lived in the Bay Islands of Honduras since 1998, leaving the stress of the corporate world and the increasing population of Colorado behind. They now run the International Living Honduras office.

They both have a long background with the largest school district in Colorado, specializing in special needs children; Janine then moved into the non-profit arena for several years before their change in latitude, which inspired a change in attitude to a simpler lifestyle. On the island of Roatan they were involved in real estate and property management for a number of years; Janine was the sales manager for the prestigious development Lawson Rock.

Their time is now divided between assisting International Living members who are interested in Honduras, and traveling the country, seeking out new areas of interest for our readers.

Tugliani and Tugliani – This well-established firm has helped scores of people make the legal leap to becoming a resident, investor, or even a citizen of Honduras. They’ll make sure you know all the legal aspects of buying real estate, Honduran residency requirements, and other matters that will ensure you don’t run into any problems down the road.

Christian Wing brings you his first-hand knowledge of real estate development as the owner and developer of Villa Elena, a golf and country club-style community 25 minutes outside the capital city of Tegucigalpa.

Arlie Thompson of El Ahorro Hondureno will give you the low down on what you need – and what you’ll spend – to get yourself, your property and your business properly protected and insured in Honduras.

Lloyd Davison runs a coffee plantation – and also established a bird park – in Copan. He’ll tell you how he did it, why he picked Copan, and what his corner of Honduras has to offer retirees and entrepreneurs like himself.

Realtors, Realtors, Realtors – Janine and Ron have met and worked with the best from every part of the Bay Islands and the most desirable parts of the mainland. Plus, you’ll be offered an opportunity to visit the areas that you find most enticing after the presentations are over.

The Ministry of Tourism in Honduras is one of the most welcoming – and informative – resources. Find out the hottest trends – which hotels and resorts are being built and when they’ll be opening, which cruise lines are landing at which Honduran ports, and what kinds of tourism business opportunities are available.

Resort Representatives – Maybe taming a few wild acres and building your own dream home isn’t for you. Turnkey living opportunities will be well-represented. From simple condos to luxury living, developments are underway, such as Palma Real…Honduras Shores…Turtle Crossing…Keyhole Bay…Lawson Rock…Parrot Tree Plantation…and many, many more.

Local Expatriates – One thing is for sure, if you decide to make Honduras a part of your life – whether as a second home, or a whole new life – you won’t be alone! There is a thriving expatriate community that is also very tight-knit and accessible. Meet many of them and hear their stories first-hand over a relaxed sunset cocktail.

*Speakers subject to change.
