and, Simply Put, Make Your International Living Dreams Come True…
Dear International Living Reader,
Imagine lounging on your deck, a cocktail in hand, the quiet turquoise waters of the Caribbean spread out before you…
Or picture yourself relaxing in a flower-filled courtyard where lavender bougainvillea tumbles over stucco walls, and the sweet perfume of frangipani fills the air at dusk…
Maybe you dream, instead, of a mountain retreat where the air is crisp, and you live amidst expansive, snow-capped peaks…
Or perhaps it's an elegant pied-à-terre you envision… an apartment with 20-foot ceilings and crown molding, where geraniums fill your window boxes and your days and evenings are busy with the cosmopolitan pleasures of big-city living…
"I've lived overseas for almost a decade. It's a pleasure and a challenge. International Living has found a way to reduce some of the challenge...while actually increasing the pleasure. - William Bonner, President, Agora, Inc.

Whatever your dream, I guarantee it: In the world's best havens, it can be yours… for pennies on the dollar.
In destinations like Panama, Nicaragua, Mexico, Honduras, France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, Thailand, Argentina, Uruguay, Belize, Ecuador, Croatia, and beyond, you really can enjoy "The Good Life" -- less stress, more freedom, and better living. And more often than not, it'll cost you a fraction of what you pay to live back home.
Get the Inside Scoop from Expats Already Living Overseas… Doing What You're Dreaming You’d Like To Do, Too
I'd like to invite you to join me in Montreal, September 6th to 9th, 2006, for a whirlwind tour of the best opportunities for living, retiring, buying real estate, and starting a business in the world right now…plus tips, advice, and recommendations for how, exactly, how you can take advantage of them.
And this isn’t about theory. This is about real life. You’ll hear from experts and expats living outside the States and Canada, doing business overseas, buying real estate in the world’s top markets. They’ll tell you where to do it and how to do it…from their own firsthand experience. I’m not overstating the point to say that you could not collect such a faculty on your own…not at any price.
Over four power-packed days at our Live Overseas Conference, you'll pick up more insider intelligence and on-the-ground know-how than you ever could in a year spent researching on your own.
That's because we invite not only institutional experts--like offshore experts, real estate agents and developers, and well-respected authorities on taxation, privacy, banking, and international law--but also our own editorial staff and contributors and colleagues worldwide…plus the directors of our local offices.
As I said, these people are running businesses…building houses…enjoying a comfortable (and affordable) retirement…buying property in the world's best havens…They’re opening bank accounts, shipping their household goods, shopping for cars and appliances, arranging for broadband internet and cable TV, considering their health insurance options, paying their bills, managing their finances… Many have reinvented themselves in their new lives abroad. You’ll hear how they’re now able to follow the dreams they may have put aside for decades. They’re learning new languages…opening new businesses…taking up fishing, painting, wine-making…
You'll not only benefit from their formal presentations, but you'll have a chance to meet with all our experts and expats casually, have a drink at the bar -- and "pick their brains" as it were.
"It was clear to me after meeting the speakers and staff of International Living that they are committed to providing the most accurate information available to them at the time. This is certainly a group of very well informed global thinkers." - Ann F, Hazel Green, WI

-
Ten things you should consider before you move overseas--surefire ways to save yourself time, money, and hours of frustration later on....
Where You Can Live Better for Less… Diversify Your Portfolio… and Enjoy More Freedom, Safety, and Privacy...
Whether you're looking for a place to reinvent yourself...a retreat you can enjoy a month or two a year... or a destination where you can put down full-time roots... you'll be pleased with what you discover this September. You'll learn about --
-
A glorious retreat just a couple of hours from the States where the weather lingers near 68 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, which means you can play golf January through December. Stores like Costco, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart stock familiar items at reasonable prices. Medical care is excellent…and a full check-up will run you just $30. Crime is nearly unheard of. And the pace of life is slow and gentle. For $120,000 you can enjoy a bright, two-bedroom house with a blossom-filled patio.
-
The country with the world’s best retirement program, which grants 25% off airfares…15% off doctors' visits…discounts on groceries, and more. Not only that, but you needn’t even be retired. If you’re between 18 and 78, you can qualify…and you only need live there four months a year.
-
The nation where you can wake up each morning to a warm croissant and a cup of frothy hot coffee...purchase rich creamy brie fresh from the farm...see the world's greatest masterpieces displayed in a King's palace...shop for a Hermes scarf…and stop for fresh-cut flowers on your way home…all in the same day. Yet here in Europe's most touristed country, you can still find a pied-a-terre in the city for $196,000.
-
The best place in Latin America to run a tourist-related business. If yours qualifies, you pay no income taxes for up to 10 years, no property taxes for up to 10 years, and you can bring in (or buy locally) all the supplies you need, from furniture and boats to linens and cash registers, tax-free. Depending on the type of project, you can qualify with an investment of as little as $40,000.
-
An extraordinarily affordable, friendly, and beautiful community in South America where the weather is near-perfect year-round. Nestled in a green valley, you can pick up 5 acres of land there for $25,000. Here the mountain and valley views are stunning.
-
Listed by Conde Nast as one of the world's top ten most beautiful islands, this gem of a European retreat is surrounded by sapphire waters and gets 2,700 hours of sunshine per year. Here lavender and wild flowers bloom with abandon, and clutches of quaint towns and villages dot the landscape. A home in need of restoration sells for $75,000 to $125,000.
72 Hours from Dream to Reality
Discover one of North America’s
most historic and cosmopolitan cities.…
While most of your days will be spent planning your new dream life overseas, we've left some room for you to explore and enjoy the sensational French-Canadian city of Montréal.
Known by many as “The Paris of the West” and “North America’s Most European City,” Montréal boasts narrow cobblestone streets, French-speaking locals, a famous Parisian-style historic district, a thriving culinary scene, and a sizzling nightlife.
The only thing missing is the long transatlantic flight!
In Montréal, you’ll find a bounty of attractions to choose from:
Old Montreal (Vieux Montreal)--This historic, once-fortified district of Montreal is distinctively European in character: Cobblestone streets, café culture, and historic 17th- and 18th-century architecture abound here. In fact, one of its oldest buildings dates back to the 1600s. It’s one of the oldest urban areas in North America. You can explore preserved colonial mansions such as the Château Ramezay, the Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site of Canada, the preserved foundations of Montreal's city walls, the Notre-Dame de Montréal Basilica, the 1684 Sulpician seminary--the oldest extant building in Montreal, and the 1888 New York Life building--the oldest skyscraper in Canada.
Montreal Casino (Casino de Montreal)--Open 24 hours, 7 days a week, you can try your luck here any time you wish. The casino consists of three buildings, two of which were built for The 1967 International and Universal Exposition. Here you’ll find over 3200 slot machines, over 120 gaming tables, four restaurants, four bars, and a cabaret.
The Underground City--Designed by architect I. M. Pei--also behind the Louvre’s magnificent glass pyramid--this underground facility was originally constructed to escape the traffic and Montreal's harsh winter. Today, over 500,000 people use the underground city every day. It consists of 20 miles of tunnels spread over an area of over 7 miles in downtown Montreal. It’s truly impressive! In the Underground City, you’ll find numerous shopping malls, museums, elegant boutiques, train stations, a hockey arena, and much more. With over 280 stores, there’s bound to be something for even the most hard-to-please shopper.
Other attractions worth considering include the Montreal Biodome, the Olympic Park, Mount Royal, and much more…
Stay in the heart of Montreal
We’ve selected the Hyatt Regency Montréal--located in the heart of Montréal's cultural district.
Few Montréal hotels offer direct underground access to the Montréal Convention Centre, the Metro and the Contemporary Museum of Art. The Hyatt Regency Montréal is also within walking distance of Old Montréal, Chinatown and the trendiest restaurants.
The Hyatt Regency Montréal features 605 handsomely appointed guest rooms and suites with spectacular views of this dynamic city. Adjacent to this magnificent hotel is the Complexe Desjardins with 120 shops, boutiques, and restaurants.
At the Hyatt Regency Montréal, you can treat yourself and your partner to a culturally-rich experience you’ll remember for years to come.
On-site facilities include wireless high-speed internet access, an indoor pool, a fully-equipped fitness center, a French-inspired restaurant, and much more…

I encourage you to come to this conference with your idea of the perfect locale in mind--that mythic haven you muse about--and let our speakers help you match that dream to a place that really exists.
Many of our contributing editors and in-country representatives will be on hand in Montreal, among them Brandon Clogston in town from Panama, Amber Garrison from France, Marzena Romanowicz from Mexico, Joe Rosko from Nicaragua, Lee Harrison from Ecuador, Paul Reynolds and his wife Maria from Argentina (they’ll introduce you to the opportunities in Uruguay right now, too, where they also have an office), Carol Milligan from Italy, Ron and Janine Goben from Honduras, and Steenie Harvey, our roving editor in Europe, who will fly in from Ireland.
From them you’ll gain invaluable on-the-ground insights about everything from the actual cost of day-to-day life to the trick to getting your belongings into the country duty-free. Find out what brought them to their adopted homes (and the nearby countries they report on)…and discover what they like (and dislike) about each.
And that's just the beginning. We've also invited a whole host of additional speakers, including expatriate entrepreneurs who will talk about what businesses they have underway, the unique challenges they face, and the lessons they've learned.
On the roster, too, are real estate agents and developers from some of our favorite countries as well as local attorneys. They'll detail for you the ins and outs of buying property and the various ways to get residency and citizenship in the countries we believe make the most sense.
Where Real Estate Offers a Hedge against U.S. Markets…

You know, beyond the attraction of comfortable, good-value living, many of the nations we'll profile make sense, too, as places to invest for profit outside the U.S. markets.
Adding international real estate to your investment portfolio is an excellent way to diversify your holdings… and a hedge against a sour economy at home.
Identify the right market at the right time, and you can see returns of 800% or more in as little as three to five years. This September we'll show you where and how to do it.
You'll hear from Lief Simon, Global Real Estate editor, who will profile his picks--the undiscovered destinations where investors who get in early could profit handsomely.
For instance, there's a nation where you can buy excellent-quality property for 30 cents on the dollar…which translates to land where you can build your dream home for less than $10,000 an acre (that's in a gated community with a clubhouse, pool, polo field, and more) or an elegant apartment in a good neighborhood of a cosmopolitan city for as little as $62,000.
In "the Costa Rica of this Decade," political, economic, and social stability has put the nation on the fast-track to First World status. En route, however, there's money to be made on coastal property and colonial-era homes--if you buy now, before the place is "discovered."
This September not only will you hear about the destinations that hold the most profit potential right now, but Lief will also talk about what it is you look for in a country when you're weighing the probability that property prices will go up. Find out what indicators to watch and what warning signs should spell caution.
Learn How to Use Overseas Destinations to Protect Your Personal Privacy and Financial Freedom
For many--perhaps you included--this interest in living and investing overseas is driven, more than anything else, by an urge to escape. As you know, in the months following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S., Congress hastily passed several laws that significantly curb personal privacy and financial freedom.
But by taking advantage of certain offshore opportunities, you can reclaim some measure of privacy and better protect your hard-earned assets and investments.
To help you do so, we've invited several "offshore" experts to speak to you, among them Robert Bauman, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and editor of The Sovereign Society Offshore A-Letter and Larry Grossman, Managing Director of Sovereign International Asset Management, LLC.
From them you'll learn what to look for in an offshore jurisdiction and get an up-to-date report on the ones worth considering today. Plus they'll outline for you some of the most effective, legal ways to use offshore structures -- including how to take your IRA or pension plan offshore.
You Gain a Truly Comprehensive, Up-to-Date Picture

"As soon as Kathleen approached the podium to introduce "the team" I knew I had made the right decision to attend this conference. The plans I came with changed - changed for the better, because I have more to work with. Now our approach can be more direct - focused, with very specific goals to achieve." - John D., Sunset Hills, MO

More On-the-Ground Intelligence than You Could Ever Hope
to Track Down on Your Own…
Perhaps the most important advantage you gain by attending the Live Overseas Conference this year is that in just four days, you'll learn about an extraordinary number of opportunities available to you all over the world. If you were to go trekking in search of them on your own, you'd be at it for months...years, more likely.
But for 26 years, our staff has been doing that legwork on your behalf. This conference in September is your chance to benefit from the enormous stockpile of knowledge and perspective we've gathered.
In addition to the meetings and the Quick-Fire Bonus Sessions, you'll also gain entrance to our Exhibit Hall of invited sponsors--real estate agents, bankers, and others--who will be on hand to tell you about their services and help round-out your understanding not only of each destination, but of the resources available to you as you consider internationalizing your life and your portfolio.
You’ll Have Fun Learning
What's more, I guarantee this will prove an enjoyable social event. We've arranged for two cocktail parties--and a Lifetime and Roundtable Members special event--so you'll have an opportunity to rub elbows in a casual environment with your fellow participants and speakers.
If you're traveling by yourself, please don't hesitate to come. You'll find you're among like-minded attendees--interesting, entrepreneurial, well-traveled folks who share your interests. You'd be amazed at the number of friendships--and even business partnerships--that have sprung up among attendees of this conference in past years.
We'll be organizing some informal social events, too--making sure folks are headed to dinner together and suggesting some activities you might like to do while you're in town. Point is: This promises to be not only a life-changing event, but also an enjoyable and fun getaway.
Meet the Experts You'll Hear from in Montreal
We'll ensure you're well-connected by the time this conference comes to a close. You'll meet and hear from the staff in our field offices and from a whole host of additional speakers--experts in everything from international real estate to offshore banking.
Together they'll deliver exactly the information you need to make an informed decision about the destinations that make the most sense for your situation. Among the excellent speakers you'll meet and hear from are--
Kathleen Peddicord , Editor and Publisher, International Living. Ms. Peddicord has 20 years experience speaking and writing on the topics of investing in real estate in foreign markets and living and retiring abroad. She has appeared, speaking on these subjects, on numerous radio and TV programs, including a guest spot on Regis and Kathy Lee, and has edited many books and reports on how to live, invest, or retire in another country. She'll profile her top eight picks for investment, retirement, or a romantic hideaway overseas. Find out where the smartest real estate deals are...the countries with the best retirement-incentive programs... the places that offer the most business opportunities...and more. Plus, find out what 16 questions you should ask yourself before you move overseas...and the 10 things you'll want to prioritize before you choose your retirement haven. Seven years ago, Ms. Peddicord moved her family and the International Living publishing group from the East Coast of the States to Waterford, Ireland. More recently, she and her family made another move, to France, and now divide their time between Paris and Waterford.
Lief Simon, Editor, Global Real Estate Investor. Mr. Simon, based in Ireland, Paris, and the United States, holds a Master's Degree in International Management from Thunderbird. He has owned real estate in Europe, Central America , and North America; and has lived on five continents. Mr. Simon will tell you, from personal experience, about the pitfalls to avoid when investing in international real estate--his tips and advice could save you thousands of dollars and months of headaches. In addition, Lief will give you his top three picks for the smartest places around the world to buy property today. These days, when stock-market returns can be unreliable, diversifying your portfolio to include international real estate may prove the smartest, most profitable, move you can make. Mr. Simon will detail how...and where...to do it.
Robert E. Bauman, Legal Counsel, The Sovereign Society and a former U.S. Congressman. Mr. Bauman is the author of The Passport Book: The Complete Guide to Offshore Residency, Dual Citizenship, and Second Passports as well as a host of other books and articles. He will paint a picture of the current offshore landscape, giving you his top three picks for the safest places to protect your assets and your privacy in 2006 and beyond. Plus he'll walk you, step-by-step, down the most prudent path to follow as you "go offshore," pointing out potential pitfalls and legal signposts.
Ron and Janine Goben , Managers, International Living's office in Honduras. From the Goben's you'll learn about the last frontier in the Caribbean--English-speaking islands where real estate costs a fraction of what you'd pay in a place like St. John. Ron and Janine have lived in the Bay Islands of Honduras since 1998, leaving the stress of the corporate world and the increasing population of Colorado behind.
Steenie Harvey, Correspondent in Europe, International Living. Based in Ireland , Ms. Harvey has been writing for International Living for the past decade. These days, as IL's "Roving Euro Editor," she travels every month in search of attractive, affordable places across the continent to live and invest. She'll talk about Spain and Thailand, highlighting the little-known destinations where you'll find not only tremendous beauty, but good-value living, too.
Suzan Haskins and Dan Prescher have been exploring and researching lifestyle and investment opportunities in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Mexico on behalf of International Living for more than three years now. To ensure firsthand information they spent nearly three months on the road in Mexico before deciding to make their home in the country's Colonial Heartland where the weather is perfect year-around (really!) and there are so many cultural activities that finding a free spot on their calendar is rare. Suzan and Dan continue to travel throughout Mexico, scoping out up-and-coming hot spots that offer new opportunities and reporting on tried-and-true locations where property prices are appreciating rapidly. To share their experiences, and to inform others about how to safely and securely buy Mexican leisure, investment or retirement property, they developed www.MexicoInsider.com. During their presentation, they'll tell you where it's possible to live like royalty for $2,100 a month.
Brandon Clogston, Country Consultant, International Living Panama. Brandon was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska and received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Journalism from the University of Nebraska--Omaha. He has lived and worked in three countries and first contributed to International Living by assisting in the Mexico International Living and Mexico Insider offices. Brandon has worked as editor of an Omaha alternative newspaper and also as an English as a Foreign Language Instructor. As editor of Panama Insider and Country Consultant for International Living, he focuses on issues pertaining to retirement and relocation, investment, offshore banking and travel in Panama.
Rainelda Mata-Kelly, L.L.M. Lawyer, Commercial & Shipping Law, Law Offices of Rainelda Mata-Kelly. With a Master's Degree in Law from Cornell University Law School and more than 20 years of legal experience behind her, Panama-based Mata-Kelly is ideally suited to answer your questions about the nuts-and-bolts of real-estate transactions, immigration, and work permits, as well as business-related issues like contract, labor, and tax matters. She'll outline for you the how-to's of becoming a "retiree" in Panama--it's not a complicated process, but it is bureaucratic. She'll tell you exactly what you need to do to take advantage of the benefits offered by Latin America 's best retiree-incentive program.
Turalu Brady Murdock, Counsel, First American Title Insurance Company. Ms. Murdock works in the Caribbean/Latin America Division of First American, based in South Florida, which provides residential, commercial, and homebuilder title services from Mexico to Chile and throughout the islands of the Caribbean. She'll discuss how...and why...you should guarantee your investment overseas and outline the steps you should take to do it. Getting title insurance on your property--particularly in young real estate markets where title disputes are often common--is a prudent way to ensure that you know what you're buying...that what you're buying is a "saleable" piece of property...and that in the event of a future title challenge, you've got somebody at your disposal who will look after your interests.
Charles Butler, Jr., Director, Everbank World Markets. Mr. Butler is a well-respected and frequently quoted analyst on the currency market. Over the past two years alone, he's been featured in or quoted by the Wall Street Journal, US News and World Report, CBS MarketWatch, USA Today, CNNfn, and the Chicago Tribune, among others. He's the author of the popular e-letter, the "Daily Pfennig," delivered daily to thousands of market-watchers to help them stay on top of economic and currency happenings. He'll talk about ways you can turn the dollar's falling value to your advantage and invest profitably in global currencies.
Michael Cobb, President, Gran Pacifica, Nicaragua. Gran Pacifica Resort sits on 3.5 miles of Pacific beachfront due west of Managua, Nicaragua. There, a 250-room resort hotel is in the planning stages along with 27 holes of golf and associated amenities. A real estate development will accompany the project. There owners and renters will be able to take advantage of the resort's facilities. Mr. Cobb will talk about how you can take advantage of investment opportunities here.

After 12 years with Bechtel Power Corporation, he moved to Exelon Generation (one of the nation’s largest power generators), where he ultimately served as a director. Taking advantage of an early retirement offering, he retired in 2001 at age 49, sold off most of his worldly possessions, and moved to Cuenca, Ecuador. He now spends his time as a Contributing Editor for International Living, and frequently contributes to Hoy, a Spanish-language newspaper based in Quito, Ecuador. Special Add-On Workshop: Turn Your Everyday Snap Shots into Cash
Rich Wagner, professional photographer and digital photography instructor, has agreed to create a “fast track,” condensed version of our popular 3+ day Travel Photographer's Workshop for Live Overseas Montreal attendees ONLY.
If you're intrigued by the prestige of seeing your photos in magazines… or if you long for a career or sideline that lets you travel whenever you like and live wherever you prefer… then this is, hands down, the best place to begin your adventure.
The workshop starts at the Hyatt Regency Montreal on Tuesday, September 5th and runs through the morning on Wednesday, September 6th.
On Tuesday, we'll have a full day of photo work, starting with a classroom session from 9.00 a.m.-12 noon, followed by an out-and-about Montreal photo shoot from 2.00-6.00 p.m. In our morning session, you’ll focus on getting to know your camera and the secrets behind taking pictures that make you look like a pro. During the afternoon, you’ll be out snapping saleable photos, putting into practice the techniques you’ll have just learned in class.
Wednesday’s program starts at 8:00 a.m. and runs until 10:30 a.m. This morning, you’ll return to the classroom where you’ll critique your photos from your field trip as a group.
Plus We'll Give You the First Installment of our Photo Course… FREE
To reinforce what you’ve learned in the live fast-track photo workshop, you’ll also receive the first installment of AWAI’s new self-study course Turn Your Pictures into Cash: A Comprehensive Program in Taking and Selling Amazing Photographs.
This comprehensive guide includes 7 lessons on topics like choosing the right camera for you… what you need – and don’t need – to start your career as a paid photographer… how to produce the kind of pictures your clients want to buy… the three crucial components in every professional quality photograph (and how to master them)… and much more.
As this is a special offer for people attending Live Overseas ONLY, you’ll get the details of how to enroll in this special fast-track photo workshop for only $299 and receive the first installment of Turn Your Pictures into Cash (a $79 value) FREE when you register.
If you have a passion for photography, and want to learn how you can turn your simple vacation shots into income, don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from the masters at a price you can’t beat.
Our sold out, full-length photo workshop in Paris this past May cost $1,597. But you can attend this 1+ day session for only $299 – and you’ll receive the first installment of the self-study program, Turn Your Pictures into Cash: A Comprehensive Program in Taking and Selling Amazing Photographs (a $79 value) FREE.
To ensure adequate time to critique your photos, this class is limited to 20 people, so act quickly.
Note: Point-and-shoot cameras are welcomed -- and even encouraged -- for first-time snappers. (Digital cameras only please).
