Live and Prosper in Mexico Seminar

Dear Mexico Insider Reader,

If you've ever dreamed of owning your own hideaway, a place with gentle arches and hand-painted tiles… a home that opens to a lush garden where pink bougainvillea and red roses bloom year-round… where you could afford a cook and a maid and a gardener… then you should turn your attention now to this part of Mexico's Colonial Highlands

In this part of Mexico, where cobbled streets curve around lavishly restored homes and shops… piles of pink, fuchsia, and lavender blossoms tumble over fences and balconies… and European plazas with their fountains and cafés beckon… you can live well, very well, for about $2,300 a month -- less if you own your home outright instead of renting.

What's more, you can purchase a small, two-bedroom condo in a new community in the countryside for as little as $115,000 and enjoy it full-time or rent it out when you're not around to more than cover your costs.

While this is, certainly, a "discovered" region, we've found lovely enclaves in lesser-known towns where you can still find extraordinary buys (with great potential increase in value). And in better-known San Miguel, we've identified several excellent investment opportunities that promise safe -- and even significant -- returns.

Years Worth of Intelligence in Three Value-Packed Days

That's why, from October 29-31, 2006, I'd like to invite you to join us in San Miguel de Allende for our popular Live and Prosper in Mexico Seminar.

This is the perfect time to be in Colonial Mexico…in the days leading up to the colorful Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). We’ll give you plenty of time to soak up the local culture. Plus, we've gathered a distinguished panel of experts based here and beyond to share with you their secrets to better and more profitable living in one of the world's most beautiful destinations.

Mexico has a tremendous amount to recommend it when it comes to comfortable, easy living. This little slice of Europe, just a couple hours plane ride south of the United States, is a treasure trove of homes that belong in the pages of Architectural Digest.

The weather lingers near 70 or 75 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, which means you can play golf January through December. Stores like Wal-Mart and Sam's Club (in nearby Queretaro) stock familiar items at reasonable prices. Medical care is excellent… and typically costs half or less what you might expect to pay in the States.

When you join us in San Miguel this fall, we'll provide you with everything you need to make a smooth transition to The Good Life here. We guarantee: You'll gain more useful, on-target information over these three, power-packed days than you ever could in a year spent tracking down this material on your own.

We'll cover all the how-to's from finding your dream home… to financing a property purchase… from getting your household goods here… to arranging a visa… from purchasing health insurance… to banking and investing… from taxes… to day-to-day living… and more.

This celebration may sound macabre,
but in truth, it is a celebration of life.

We’ve scheduled our next Live and Prosper in Mexico Seminar to take place just before Mexico’s famous Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The Mexican, as writer Octavio Paz observed, is undaunted by death. He has no qualms about getting up close and personal with death. In fact, “…chases after it, mocks it, courts it, sleeps with it; it is his favorite plaything and his most lasting love.”

Day of the Dead festivities in Mexico last from mid-October through November 2nd, and although traditions vary according to the ethnic roots of each region, markets and shops throughout the country are full of the colorful adornments used in the celebrations. Skeletons and other macabre toys; intricate tissue paper cut-outs called papel picado; colorful candles, wreaths and crosses decorated with paper or silk flowers; and fresh seasonal flowers. Edible goodies are sold by street vendors – skulls, coffins and the like made from sugar, chocolate or amaranth seeds, and special pastries like pan de muerto, topped with bits of dough shaped like bones. All of these goods are destined for the buyer's ofrenda de muertos (offering to the dead).

Typically, November 1st is set aside for remembrance of angelitos (little angels) – deceased infants and children. Those who have died as adults are honored November 2nd. On these days, special foods are prepared, offerings are laid out for the departed on commemorative altars, and there are lively reunions at family burial plots, along with, of course, lots of noisy fireworks.

Learn from Well-Informed, Reliable Experts

You'll hear not only from our International Living staff on the ground – Marzena Romanowicz, from our Mexico office -- but also from well-informed, trustworthy legal, financial, tax, tourism, and real estate experts. From them, you'll learn about...

  • Why San Miguel is one of the best places to live in the Colonial Highlands. We'll focus on the most attractive opportunities for comfortable living available in San Miguel de Allende… and along the “Golden Corridor” between San Miguel and Dolores Hidalgo. Beautiful, vivid towns and a place where the weather is temperate year-round… the living is comfortable and affordable… and the real estate prices deliver good values.

  • A step-by-step guide to buying real estate in Mexico. Learn everything you need to know about purchasing property in Mexico in straightforward, easy-to-understand terms. Buying in a foreign country can be intimidating, but we'll make the process accessible and easy.

  • Find out what visa is right for you -- and exactly how to get one. Whether you come to Mexico to visit a few months a year, as a full-time transplant, or as an entrepreneur, you'll have to get a visa. You'll find all sorts of contradictory information out there -- but this October, we'll give you the straight story so you know exactly which visa is right for you and the most efficient way to get it.

  • Practical legal questions invariably come up when you're planning a move to Mexico -- like what to do about your will, what to expect in your tax bill (and how to manage it), how to form a Mexican corporation, and more… This July we'll walk you, step-by-step, through your best options in each area so you know what to do and what pitfalls to avoid.

San Miguel De Allende

"In San Miguel, you can get all the amenities you expect in the modern world: reliable telephone service, high-speed Internet access, etc. You can get mail delivered and posted reliably and quickly through several mail-forwarding companies. Several international franchises are here, including Domino's Pizza, Blockbuster Video and a RE/MAX real estate company. In addition to acclaimed art schools, San Miguel has one of the largest collections of English-language books in Mexico in its public library." -- Suzan Haskins and Dan Prescher, International Living's Mexico office

A Special Focus on Three Lovely Towns Where You Can Live Well and Prosper

Before I give you more details about this intensive, in-depth seminar we have planned, I want to back up for a moment and tell you a little bit about the Colonial Highland towns our Mexico staff has scoped out on your behalf -- the places they recommend you look for the region's best lifestyle and real estate opportunities.

You see, International Living staffers Suzan Haskins and Dan Prescher, have spent the last three-plus years trekking around Mexico on your behalf, identifying the best-value destinations… the most irresistible towns… the friendliest communities… the places where your dollars go the furthest … and this October, you'll hear about their top picks in Mexico's Colonial Highlands.

As you'll discover when you arrive, San Miguel de Allende -- the town where we'll be based for this fall's event -- is a vibrant community of winding cobblestone streets… tree-shaded squares where lovers kiss and children play… and beautifully renovated homes where flat, unobtrusive fronts hide fabulous, flower-filled gardens…

Not a stoplight or modern storefront mars the beauty of this historical treasure, long a destination for expatriates and a colony for artists who have flocked to the Instituto Allende since the 1930s to study and teach. The most "discovered" of the communities we'll introduce you to this fall, San Miguel provides visitors and residents with a wealth of restaurants, shops, and galleries to enjoy.

Mineral de Pozos, a 45-minute drive from San Miguel, sits at 7,500 feet in high plains desert country, where the landscape is starkly beautiful. Thorny cactus patches accentuate the rough, rolling dunes of clumpy brown dirt and scrub grass. But this desert landscape is just a backdrop. Pozos is a city of ruins. Everywhere you look, you see the remnants of what once were majestic structures -- arches, columns, adobe walls, steps. To wander here is to do so in another epoch.

This is a town on the upswing -- a community to which several artists long resident in San Miguel have already decamped. Two lovely, whitewashed hotels -- one owned by a Mexican woman who spent 15 years as an art dealer in New York, the other built five years ago next door by an American transplant -- offer appealing accommodation choices. And now a couple from Texas has renovated a home and transformed it into a lovely B&B.

So you see, Pozos is a place in this popular highland region of central Mexico where you can still "get in early" as it were. A February 2004 New York Times article profiled Pozos' appeal, however, and so word is getting out. Now is the time to act. And this October, we'll show you how.

Lake Chapala

“The Lake Chapala area has lots going for it. If you’re looking for a place to live full-time that offers perfect weather and an easy-going lifestyle, this should be on your list. You won’t be bored. Ajijic has numerous active social groups in the area including The Lake Chapala Society with more than 2,000 members. There are bridge clubs, garden clubs, the American Legion, and the Lakeside Little Theater to name a few. A variety of classes, including art, handicrafts, music and, of course, español, are available – and you can enjoy sports like tennis, golf, walking, boating, fishing, etc. There are also infinite concerts, art galleries and museums and restaurants to keep you busy.
And from this central location, you can easily explore other areas of Mexico. Lake Chapala is about an hour from Guadalajara and all the amenities that a city of 6 million people has to offer. From here, there is good highway access to such popular beach destinations as Puerto Vallarta, the Costa Alegre (Manzanillo, Barra de Navidad, Melaque). The fabulous colonial cities of Mexico -- Morelia, Zacatecas, Patzcuaro, San Miguel de Allende -- are mostly within 3-5 hours driving too.” -- Suzan Haskins, Mexico Insider

And, even though it’s a four-hour drive west of San Miguel, you will learn about the popular Lake Chapala area. Foreigners have been flocking to this area for generations...because of its year-round Spring-like temperatures and the easy-going lifestyle it affords…not to mention the majestic views of Lake Chapala from the surrounding mountains.

Lake Chapala is a place where you can still find affordable properties. But the word is out, and the real estate market here is going gangbusters. Realtors here tell us that they are selling more homes here than ever.

It’s easy to understand why this area is so popular. The foreign community here lives in harmony with their Mexican neighbors. Every weekend you’ll find a street party somewhere. Caballeros still clip clop down the cobblestone streets on their handsome horses, and every morning you awake to the sounds of birds chirping and children laughing. And the cost of living here is low. Suzan and Dan spent 2003 there, and tell us they regularly ate lunch or dinner for less than $8 for both of them. And you don’t need air conditioning in the summer or heat in the winter…the climate is that temperate!

You’ll hear all about the Lake Chapala area at our conference in October. And if this is an area that interests you, we suggest you spend a few extra days in Mexico to investigate it.

At our upcoming Live and Prosper in Mexico Seminar, not only will you get the inside scoop about the day-to-day living and investment potential in each of these lovely enclaves, you'll also meet our best contacts based in each locale.

That way, if you decide you want to investigate further the opportunities in any place you learn about -- you'll know exactly who to turn to for reliable, straight-shooting advice you can trust. (In fact, you may want to take a familiarization tour to any of these attractive destinations, once the seminar comes to a close. With that in mind, I encourage you to extend your stay for several days so you have ample time to explore. And remember, November 2 is Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead – one of the most colorful times to be in Mexico.

Mineral De Pozos

"Pozos is a small community of maybe 5,000 in high plains desert country: starkly beautiful at an altitude of 7,500 feet. Rough, rolling dunes of clumpy brown dirt, scrub grass and rock accentuated by thorny cactus patches; mostly nopals but now and again, a majestic maguey. To the west the landscape slopes upward to a forbidding and desolate mountain ridge. Any minute, you expect to see a serape-draped Clint Eastwood come riding along on a thirsty steed.
The desert landscape is just the backdrop, however – the canvas on which a unique artwork in progress is playing out. For Pozos is a city of ruins. Everywhere you look, you see the remnants of what once were majestic structures. Arches, columns, adobe walls, steps. Outside of town, these ruins are even more imposing. To be here is to step back in time… " -- Suzan Haskins,  Mexico Insider

Now is a Smart Time to Choose Mexico’s Colonial Highlands

You know, it's not just the rugged, cactus-spotted landscape… the tidy and inviting towns with their vibrant central squares, colorful homes, and blossom-filled gardens… or the comfortable and affordable lifestyle that makes Mexico's Colonial Highlands such an attractive place to invest.

There's another reason this part of Mexico makes sense.

Right now Mexico is an increasingly popular destination for tourists, and with that popularity comes increased property values. The number of tourists visiting Mexico in 2005 was up 6.5% over 2004 - a record breaking year, with revenue and arrivals outpacing positive global tourism trends. And private tourism investment in Mexico continues to increase. That trend bodes well for anybody who claims a foothold now.

Furthermore, with baby boomers turning 50 at a rate of three to four million a year, it's safe to assume that they, too, will be not only traveling to Mexico in greater numbers in the years to come… but likely retiring there in greater numbers as well. Surely one of the first places they'll investigate is Mexico's Colonial Highlands, with its temperate climate and gorgeous scenery – already a popular destination for expatriates.

San Miguel De Allende

“So are property prices going through the roof in San Miguel? Actually, no. We’ve found some real values in San Miguel, both in town and in the surrounding hills. However, a sense of perspective is required; if you’re shopping for real estate in Wichita or Fargo, these prices won’t floor you. But if you’ve been looking almost anywhere else in the United States or Europe, you’ll appreciate a condo near the heart of downtown with, killer views, and ready to rent out at San Miguel’s healthy weekly rates ($750 or more per week) for just a little over $200,000.” -- Dan Prescher, Mexico Insider

See Our Best Picks and Favorite Haunts

You'll come away from this program in October feeling as if you’ve gotten a real insider's take on this opportunity-filled region -- the kind of experience you'd never get if you just showed up as a regular tourist.

That's because we'll make a point of introducing you to our best contacts -- honest and reliable connections that can serve you well. Among those are real estate agents based in San Miguel, Mineral de Pozos and Lake Chapala -- the communities we think you'll like best. They'll tell you about properties like --

  • In central San Miguel, a one-bedroom + studio, one-bath home boasting a rooftop terrace with beautiful views of the city’s famous Parroquia lists for $129,000.

  • In the hills overlooking the tile roofs of San Miguel, in the upscale Balcones neighborhood, you can own a lovely three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath home with fabulous views of the city, a large kitchen, spacious living room, and flower-filled balcony for $300,000.

  • In the upper/middle class neighborhood of Los Frailes, a large three-bedroom, three-bath home with a living, room, family room, office, covered terrace, two patios and a newly remodeled kitchen…fully furnished…on a 5,000-square-foot lot….recently sold for $285,000.

  • Along the Golden Corridor just outside of San Miguel, new communities are being built. Here, you can buy a lot for as little as $15,000 and build your custom ‘mini-mansion’ – with all the amenities you find in the U.S. – for as little as $115 per square foot.

  • In sleepy, picturesque Pozos – fast becoming an artist’s haven – you can buy a small one-bedroom adobe house with a gorgeous terrace overlooking a beautiful cactus garden and on to the valley below. The bathroom of this house has a huge Jacuzzi tub with a large picture window that shares this view. The price: just $60,000.

Mexico's Colonial Highlands

Hotel Real De Minas
The Hotel Real De Minas

We're hosting this event at the Hotel Real de Minas in San Miguel -- beautifully decorated in rich reds and with local artwork hung throughout -- where we've arranged a special discounted room rate for seminar participants. You'll pay just $70 per night (single or double occupancy, plus tax) to stay, and this rate is good for any number of days before or after the seminar if you're planning to take some extra time to explore the region.

We've designed this event to be a truly one-of-a-kind opportunity, delivering to you on a silver platter everything you need to know about moving to Mexico… living there well … starting a business… retiring in comfort…and more.

You'll come away from these three intensive days this October with answers to all your questions and the confidence that you can be well informed as you make your dream of living or investing in Mexico a reality.

We live in uncertain times, let's face it. And part of the appeal this mountainous enclave in central Mexico holds is its seclusion. It's like a quiet throwback to a time gone past where life was simpler. Freer.

As I've said, you can live well here (playing golf, eating out, enjoying the company of like-minded friends). And, most likely, you can do it for less than you pay at home. The pace is slower. The weather is extraordinarily comfortable year-round. And the communities we'll tell you about are, as you can see with your own eyes this October, simply heart-achingly beautiful.

You could come down here on your own and take your chances… wander into a real estate office or two and call an attorney whose card you pick up in a hotel lobby. But I urge you not to…

Instead, take three days this October to plan things right. Arm yourself with solid, reliable advice and gather the tried-and-true contacts -- whether you're looking to settle here now or simply invest in your future.

The Experts You'll Meet and Hear from This October

We'll ensure you're well-connected by the time this seminar comes to a close. You'll meet and hear from our staff on-the-ground, who will share their insights about moving to and living in Mexico. But that's just the beginning. Our excellent roster of speakers includes:

  • Marzena Romanowicz of International Living's office in Mexico was born in Poland, and has lived in Canada and the U.S.. She’s hosting this high-access, fast-paced, information-intensive event in San Miguel and will share with you not only the secrets she has learned moving to and living in Mexico, but ensure you come away with answers to any questions you might have.

  • Suzan Haskins, International Living’s Latin America Editorial Director and Executive Editor of the online publication, Mexico Insider (www.MexicoInsider.com) will be your emcee for this event. Suzan has been living and traveling in Latin America on behalf of International Living for five years…most of that time in Mexico. She brings a unique perspective on what it takes to move overseas (more than once, in this case).

  • Edward Clancy, the U.S. Consular Agent stationed in San Miguel de Allende, will offer his unique insights about his role representing U.S. citizens who live in the community. He will talk about the services – emergency and otherwise – that his office offers to U.S. tourists and resident expats. Ed moved to San Miguel five years ago from Kansas City with his wife and two school-aged children. He is active in the San Miguel Educational Cooperative in Los Frailes, which his children attend, and is president of the San Miguel Chamber Music Festival.

  • Lic. Christopher T. Finkelstein F., the Director of San Miguel's new Foreign Affairs Department, heads a fully tri-lingual office with fluent speakers of English, Spanish, and French. His bureau is devoted to acting as liaison between the expatriate population and the local authorities -- a resource to help and advise you (free of charge) with any community-related question or problem you might have. He'll talk about the role of his office as well as new developments in tourism and travel within the region.

  • Guillermo González Engelbrecht, San Miguels’ Director of Tourism and Economic Development, is instrumental in promoting San Miguel de Allende to international audiences. Importantly, he works with local businesses – including those that are foreign-owned, providing loans and assistance to those with projects that stimulate the economy here.

  • Joseph Harmes, the author of the best book about San Miguel, The Best of San Miguel. He has lived in Latin America – and Mexico – for most of his career and formerly served as Miami Bureau Chief for People magazine. He’ll tell us about the best places to do just about anything in San Miguel and what makes San Miguel one of the best places in Mexico to live.

  • Turalu Murdock is Counsel at First American Title Insurance. She'll discuss how… and why… you should guarantee your investment overseas and outline the steps you should take to do it. Getting title insurance on your property is a prudent way to ensure you know what you're buying... and that it is a "saleable" piece of property. What's more, in the event of a future title challenge, you've got somebody at your disposal who will look after your interests.

  • Peter Zipper is Senior Vice President, Anglo Irish Bank, Austria. He'll focus on the ways you can protect your wealth and grow your nest egg overseas and offshore with special products designed to provide airtight privacy and wide investment opportunities.

  • Steve Patton is an insurance provider with offices in both Mexico City and San Miguel. He’ll give you the lowdown on health, auto, life and home insurance.

  • Plus more… You'll also hear from local business people, tax experts and resident expatriates who have lived in the colonial highlands for years -- we've asked them to share with you their own experiences and be on hand to answer your questions about day-to-day living.

  • Real estate agents from each of the communities we recommend. They'll each give a presentation about their own communities to give you a realistic idea about what is available for sale, how far your dollars will stretch, and for the best values on offer this July.

** Speakers and schedule are subject to change.

Free optional real estate tours of San Miguel properties will be offered by Re/Max Colonial Real Estate Company on Wednesday and Thursday, November 1 and 2 (from 9 am to 1 pm each day), following the seminar. You may sign up for these tours during the seminar, but in order to avoid disappointment, Re/Max Colonial requests that you sign up in advance. (They need to arrange for buses and want to make sure everyone who wants to attend is able to so they are offering this opportunity on a first come/first served basis.)

Please note that these tours are designed to give you an overview of what is available in the market. We will not, however, be able to see everything that is available – especially because the buses cannot maneuver on some of San Miguel’s narrow cobblestone streets. Some of the more popular ones include: www.orbitz.com, www.travelocity.com; and www.expedia.com.  We also suggest you may want to sign up for free e-mail alerts from your preferred airlines, via their websites. Many of these websites offer tips for getting the best flights, such as being flexible with travel dates and airports if possible.
