We’ve scheduled our next Live and Prosper in Mexico Seminar to take place just before Mexico’s famous Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The Mexican, as writer Octavio Paz observed, is undaunted by death. He has no qualms about getting up close and personal with death. In fact, “…chases after it, mocks it, courts it, sleeps with it; it is his favorite plaything and his most lasting love.”

Day of the Dead festivities in Mexico last from mid-October through November 2nd, and although traditions vary according to the ethnic roots of each region, markets and shops throughout the country are full of the colorful adornments used in the celebrations. Skeletons and other macabre toys; intricate tissue paper cut-outs called papel picado; colorful candles, wreaths and crosses decorated with paper or silk flowers; and fresh seasonal flowers. Edible goodies are sold by street vendors – skulls, coffins and the like made from sugar, chocolate or amaranth seeds, and special pastries like pan de muerto, topped with bits of dough shaped like bones. All of these goods are destined for the buyer's ofrenda de muertos (offering to the dead).

Typically, November 1st is set aside for remembrance of angelitos (little angels) – deceased infants and children. Those who have died as adults are honored November 2nd. On these days, special foods are prepared, offerings are laid out for the departed on commemorative altars, and there are lively reunions at family burial plots, along with, of course, lots of noisy fireworks.

Free optional real estate tours of San Miguel properties will be offered by Re/Max Colonial Real Estate Company on Wednesday and Thursday, November 1 and 2 (from 9 am to 1 pm each day), following the seminar. You may sign up for these tours during the seminar, but in order to avoid disappointment, Re/Max Colonial requests that you sign up in advance. (They need to arrange for buses and want to make sure everyone who wants to attend is able to so they are offering this opportunity on a first come/first served basis.)

Please note that these tours are designed to give you an overview of what is available in the market. We will not, however, be able to see everything that is available – especially because the buses cannot maneuver on some of San Miguel’s narrow cobblestone streets. We recommend that you go on the tours in the morning and make appointments with Re/Max agents to see other individual properties in the afternoons.
