A Special Bulletin from Kathleen Peddicord… If you haven’t yet checked out Panama for yourself…put your own toes in the sand here…witnessed the striking tropical landscapes and coastlines on both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts…explored the Switzerland-like mountain towns in the interior valleys… and indulged the offerings of the bustling cosmopolitan capital of Panama City… I’m writing to urge you to join us:
Don’t Put Off Your Panama Dreams Another Day. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Dear Reader: You’ve been tempted to come before, I’m sure…but life gets in the way sometimes. Holds us back. Until one day…you give in…
You decide you’re ready to feel the balmy breeze rush your hair back when you get off the plane…and see if you are instantly more relaxed. You let the sand massage your feet as the sea gently washes onto the shore…just steps away from a luxury property that costs a fraction of comparable homes along the western coast of the U.S. You hit any number of popular shopping spots and pay less for many of the same items you might purchase at home. Later, you enjoy a leisurely dinner and a night of dancing in an Old World setting complete with modern conveniences. After hearing us declare it as the World's #1 Retirement Haven for six straight years in a row…you’ve got to be a little curious. Is it really that great? Could it possibly be the paradise we keep writing about? In a word…yes. It really is. You’ll see when you join me in August …
Nothing in the world can take the place of seeing--and feeling--a place for yourself. That sense you get the minute your feet touch the soil that you could easily call this place home--or at least, a home away from home. Well, you could continue to read our emails…you could continue to read about it in the mainstream press…you could continue to hear your friends raving about the deal they got on their beachfront dream home and how much fun they had on their last trip… But you and I both know it’s true: To really discover a dynamic place like Panama, the best way is--without question--to come down and experience it for yourself…
…to meet the other expats that are already living, investing, and starting new businesses in Panama… …to meet the local experts that are already intimately familiar with the local tax laws…the residency laws…the banking system…the business opportunities…the real estate market… …and, especially, to meet the IL Panama Office team--an experienced crew of on-the-ground expats that’s constantly scouting the country in search of new opportunities. This team lives and breathes Panama 24/7…and you won’t find a support system like this in place anywhere else in the world. Yes, when you come to Panama in person, you’ll really get to see Panama, feel Panama, and experience Panama yourself…and come to your own conclusions about what Panama has to offer you.
Donald Trump has declared it a hot spot. Forbes just upgraded it to the more positive rating of “stable.” The world-famous Panama Canal is about to undergo a $5.25 billion expansion and more than double its capacity.
Panama is finally getting its fair share of respect and recognition for the growth and opportunity we’ve been reporting to you for the last 12 years. According to an October 25, 2006 article in the Economist Intelligence Unit, “Among the largest projects in progress are the following…
Though we often prefer to stay off the beaten track, we have to admit: It’s pretty exciting to watch Panama grow into the powerhouse opportunity we always knew it could be. And we’ve been surprised, too… All this growth and development doesn’t mean less opportunity for the little guy like you and me. It simply means there are more ways to make your mark here. But you have to stay on your toes. Which is why I strongly urge you to make the trip to Panama this August and find out firsthand…
The full benefit of discovering Panama ahead of the pack is now bearing fruit for our readers. It means that while others are just coming down for the first time to see what all the fuss is about--we’ve already been here for a decade! We’ve made the contacts, learned the ways of this country, and found both the opportunities--and the pitfalls--firsthand. And we’ll dedicate three days in August to passing all this hard-won knowledge, information--and even introductions to our circle of experts and expats--directly to you. We’re fortunate to have speakers who can cover just about every imaginable Panama-related topic, including:
Our speakers will show you how easy it is in Panama to:
Among the excellent speakers you'll meet and hear from are: Sarah Cox and Brandon Clogston--Real Estate Consultants for Pangaea, our preferred real-estate advertiser--will be on hand to discuss the opportunities and deals they have found, from the tranquil mountainside towns of Boquete and Cerro Punta…to the laid back islands of Contadora, and Cormaca de Kuna Yala…to the country’s many beachfront properties…as well as the booming metropolis of Panama City and its changing landscape of opportunities. Plus, they’ll tell you about the twelve steps everyone needs to know to avoid mishaps, and successfully purchase an investment, second residence, or full-time home in the various regions of Panama… Rainelda Mata-Kelly practices commercial and shipping law in Panama and will provide you with all the details on Panama’s benefit-laden tax laws… Jose Bern has worked in the real estate arena in Panama since 1998 and is one of the most knowledgeable experts on the prospects of the Panamanian real estate market from then until now… Robert G. Kroesen is a Panamanian of Dutch origin and is involved today in one of the largest reforestation projects in Panama. He’ll tell you about the teak alternative in Panama--and its implications with investment and residency… Derek Sambrook has been a trust and estate practitioner and is an expert in the areas of offshore banking, trusts, and insurance for the British government in the Caribbean for more than 30 years. Derek will go over offshore estate planning in Panama and the many ways you might benefit from going offshore… Robert E. Bauman, JD is a former member of the United States House of Representatives from Maryland (1973-1981) and is known today for his expertise on all things offshore. He will paint a picture of the current offshore landscape, giving you his top picks for the safest places to protect your assets and your privacy in 2007 and beyond. Plus, he'll walk you, step-by-step, down the most prudent path to follow as you "go offshore," pointing out potential pitfalls and legal signposts… Dr. Angel Alvarado, a Doctor in Medicine at the Universidad de Panama and Dr. Marco Gonzalez, an Internal Medicine specialist at the new John Hopkins Punta Pacifica Hospital, Giulia Gonzalez is an expert in the booming rentals market in Panama City and has spent these months developing several projects that help people as they relocate and/or invest in Panama…. Hildegard Vásquez is an architect specialized in historical restoration projects and is a major contributor to the recent upsurge of real estate investments in Casco Viejo restoration projects. Her restoration experiences range from the restoration of Panama´s National Theater to private residential and commercial buildings including our own International Living offices. She will give you all the pros and pitfalls of restoring properties in Panama. Monique De Roux, a Home Financing Specialist for Scotiabank deals mainly with foreign clients that are coming to invest here in Panama and will share all the ins and outs of financing your dreams here…. Plus many, many more experts who will be on-hand--as many as 55 from every possible area of expertise--to help you get the information you need to take your next steps. Many of our experts will take the podium as presenters--and many more will be available in our exhibition hall throughout the seminar. Shake hands and chat informally between sessions and find out for yourself what really makes Panama tick--and how you can best jump in yourself
…especially with the increase in attention that Panama has been receiving from the mainstream press, travel magazines, and cruise ships. The comments have been wracking up in some pretty impressive places: “…property here remains a fraction of what one would pay for similar real estate in the United States. And with enticements like a 20-year suspension of property taxes to those who build houses or renovate in a historic district, and an income tax hiatus for those starting some small businesses, the opportunities are appealing not only for those seeking a place to retire but also for entrepreneurs.” “Panama hands new American retirees a property-tax exemption and steep discounts on everything from movies to surgery… You can live in a nice place by the water, and you can live dirt-cheap…” “…[Panama] lets retirees import a car tax-free every two years, import $10,000 of household items tax-free, and buy property tax-free…” “The most beautiful retreat in the world…” “The Number One Retirement Destination in the Western Hemisphere” Fortune Magazine highlighted Boquete, a mountainous city with a burgeoning expatriate population, and included it on their top five list of paradise places to retire abroad. The AARP noted this jewel of a town as well, once granting it the #4 spot on their list of best places to retire.
IL’s real estate experts will direct your attention to the newest trends and hottest areas that will keep you one step ahead of the rest. You’ll learn:
Even the newest International Living readers know a little about Panama. After all, for six years running, it’s come out on top of our Annual Global Retirement Index. It has the famous pensionado program--with its dizzying array of benefits and discounts that sets it apart year after year If you can document a minimum monthly pension of $500 (plus another $100 per dependent) and you meet a few other simple requirements, you may be eligible for a long list of perks, such as:
To qualify for Panama’s pensionado program, all you need is to receive a minimum of $500 from a government or well-known corporate entity--no matter what your age! And if it’s a private pension, then you can qualify once you’re at least 50 years old. Remember, too, that these are discounts off of already low costs. Panama City might feel like New York City in some ways--but not to your wallet. Whether you are living on a pension or fixed budget--or you just like to spend less and get more--Panama will make your heart sing. You’ll only pay 10 to 12 cents per kilowatt-hour on your electricity bill in most places. Water and trash collection will run you around $7 a month. You can hire a live-in maid for $150 a month. You’ll also live and eat like a king--local beer at the supermarket is just 35 cents a can, and a cup of coffee in a restaurant may be as little as 30 cents, too. How about an avocado for just 50 cents, a pound of chicken for a dollar, a banana for 5 cents--and a complete dinner at a mid-range restaurant -- $10 per person. Back up.
Keep in mind, these aren’t the pensionado prices--these are the regular prices. In U.S. dollars, with no worries or concerns that you’ll lose any buying power--since the U.S. dollar is the national currency used across Panama and does not need to be exchanged, ever. Plus, Panama offers peace of mind in one of the most critical areas to many expats: health care. Renowned American medical facility, Johns Hopkins, has entered into a strategic partnership with the new Hospital Punta Pacifica in Paitilla, Panama. The hospital is currently under construction, and developers have invested more than $32 million dollars in the facility…guaranteeing that high quality and affordable health care will remain abundant here for years to come. As you can see…Panama is much more than a place to retire…
But even though Panama’s famed pensionado program is likely the most benefit-laden retirement program in the world, the lure to Panama for many young professionals in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s is simply the cheaper, warmer, safer place to live, start a new business, and enjoy everything that Panama has to offer.
What’s making Panama such a hot spot for the younger crowd? It boasts:
When it comes to overseas havens, no other country comes close to Panama--hence its incredible popularity these days with forward thinking North Americans. At the Live and Prosper in Panama Seminar, you’ll hear from people who have made this choice firsthand. People like: Jennifer King, a classically trained French chef who worked in the hotel restaurant industry before moving to Panama from Oregon. Here, she opened the La Cresta de Oro, a pet-friendly B&B, and is currently working with a non-profit group to compile a guide (and website) to Panama City restaurants. Cynthia Cudmore-Mulder, born and bred in the popular Canadian tourist destination of Prince Edward Island. Once Cynthia got to the top of her game in her career, she decided it was time to take a sabbatical and traveled around the world for two years. She traveled throughout Asia…dropped her bags in Queensland, Australia for a year and explored the Great Barrier Reef and the outback…and eventually put down roots in the Caribbean island of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles and set up a second career. It was there where she met her husband, had a son--and moved on to Japan for five years. But still, they were looking for the perfect place to settle--and decided to investigate Panama for their future, finding the culture, tropical climate, and vicinity to their homes in North America and Netherland Antilles a perfect fit for their well-traveled family. Today, Cynthia manages design, construction, logistics, and development, of their Cerrito Tropical Vacation Apartments on nearby Taboga Island, and consults for other expats on projects both in the city and on Taboga. You’ll be amazed at her fascinating story--and her seasoned view of why she and her family are making Panama their permanent home. Kit Marchel is another adventurer of the world who follows the mantra to “Live your dreams, be guided by your heart, and freedom will follow in your wake.” A published author at the age of 19 and the manager of a celebrity-owned real estate portfolio in South Beach by the age of 27, Kit has nurtured her freedom quest by embarking upon “lifetime adventures,” including recently trekking the Himalayas in Nepal and Bhutan, bungee jumping and skiing in New Zealand, shark diving in Tahiti, studying the Tango in Buenos Aires, skiing in Chile, and personally donating school supplies to children in Cambodia. A devoted Lifetime Member of International Living for over 17 years, Kit is now a permanent resident of Panama and Los Angeles. Hear her personally share her reasons why she chose Panama, as well as give you hints and tips based on her recent experience. Susannah Elmore grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas--but she’s fallen in love with Panama, specifically with an enchanting strip of beachfront properties that she and her family are developing called Istana Properties. She’ll tell you all about this special eco-community and exclusive retreat that is designed specifically to protect and enhance the natural environment. Imagine a private, upscale enclave with first class amenities, just steps away from a pristine beach complemented by spectacular custom homes situated on oceanfront lots. She will take you on a visit to Istana Plantations without you having to leave your seat and will help you discover what you have been searching for, but for a fraction of the cost in the U.S. Jim and Donna Hawley’s first six-day trip to Panama in July 2004 resulted in the purchase of a city condo, and a Pacific Beach property, with the intention of investment. Their daughter, Brooke, and her boyfriend relocated in August to Panama to work with Jim and Donna and also to have the first Panamanian Hawley--born here at Hospital Punta Pacifica! Their younger daughter, Kea, is also contemplating opportunities here in Panama and a possible relocation. Gradually, their family has discovered that here in Panama, they could live a more affordable life, enjoy a higher standard of living, and even forge a less stressful work environment that leaves more time for their newest passion--golf. Since they arrived they’ve had numerous entrepreneurial adventures--and they’ll be on hand to tell you everything they’ve learned along the way…and share what’s next on the horizon for this dynamic boomer couple. There’s nothing like hearing these stories of these IL readers that now call Panama home “straight from the horse’s mouth.” They’ll tell you “their Panama story”…what they do in Panama now…what it’s like to live in Panama as an expat…what you can expect when you relocate to Panama…and much more. In between presentations, feel free to introduce yourself and ask these seasoned Panama expats any questions you may have in mind about traveling, living, retiring, or starting a new business in Panama. They’ll be glad to help you. It’s just one more reason why you’ll find the Live and Prosper in Panama Seminar the most affordable and effective way to…

Honestly, there’s so much to see and do in Panama--so many options--that it could easily be overwhelming. But when you come to an event like the Live and Prosper in Panama Seminar, you can do your best thinking, knowing that many of the most basic decisions and pieces of information have already been gathered--residency and citizenship, real estate, business opportunities, tax questions. There’s simply no need to figure it out all by yourself--we’ve done all the legwork for you. And if you’re a member of the Publisher’s Roundtable, Panama Roundtable, Lifetime Society, or World Club (or want to become one when you register), then you’ve got an extra reason to be excited about the Live and Prosper in Panama Seminar. Why? We’re holding an exclusive VIP event for you on a boat called Pacific Queen. An elegant vessel, the Queen departs from the Flamenco Island at the Causeway. Take in the history of the islands--complete with tales of how the Spanish galleons first reached Panama City laden with treasure stolen from the Incan empire…the powerful defense complex that guarded the entrance to the Canal warding off possible attacks…the American-made road that now connects the three islands…even a formerly secret military-use tunnel/command post carved deep in the rock of Flamingo Island. Over hor’s d’oeuvres and cocktails, with a jazz band playing in the background…you’ll get the feel and history of Panama, make friends with the like-minded explorers who will also be in attendance at the seminar, and something will happen… You see, this is how a new life begins--I’ve seen it over and over. Your imagination is inspired. You start to see the possibilities open up in front of you. You assess them--kick the tires if you will. And then, when you’re ready to take the leap--you’re in very good company, confident that you’re doing the right thing at the right time for your personal future. If it seems hard to resist…then why bother resisting?
You can come for the obvious reasons… …the thriving business community…the real estate opportunities…the pensionado program… …the black, tan, and white sand beaches running up and down the isthmus… …the 48 national parks, reserves, and wildlife refuges… …the tax savings…the favorable banking structures available…the proximity to the U.S. and other countries…so close, and yet so far… Everyone has their reasons for coming to Panama. The real miracle of this place is that the reasons can vary so widely--and all are so valid and right for each individual. It’s cliché, I know, but it’s more true here than anywhere else I know: Panama offers something for everyone. And with the guiding hand of our experts and expats, you’ll be able to find exactly what is waiting here for you. As I said, you should find out firsthand. And you should do it now. Sincerely,
Kathleen Peddicord
